Chanel Egypt Tweed Jacket

Drumroll!!! Please meet the teal Chanel Egypt Tweed jacket. The crown jewel of the Chanel jacket kingdom and the most spectacular piece from Karl Lagerfeld’s 2018-19 pre-fall métiers d’art collection. It became his final collection as he passed away within a short period after the launch.

Tweed That’s Worthy to Dress A Pharaoh

This collection’s name is Paris – New York. Although the New York influence is present, most of the collection took inspiration from ancient Egyptian civilization.

This jacket is truly worthy of ancient Egyptian royalty as it has bold golds, saturated color, and stunning gripoix buttons. This particular jacket is the only solid-colored tweed jacket in the entire collection.

Story Of My Acquisition

I was the lucky person who purchased the *last* one of these jackets, left in the entire company, over two years after the collection was launched. That’s right. I purchased this jacket in May of 2021.

Had it been on hold for some VVIP customer for months/years? I am not sure. My Saks SA could not dislodge it from the hold. She tried. No luck.

I finally made a connection with an SA in Chanel Chicago. That SA was very motivated to make the sale. She made some phone calls and managed to loosen the hold and get it transferred to Chicago.

It Was Love At First Sight-Twice

The husband drove me 400 miles one way to “see” this jacket. I was going to see it. Not going to buy it. That’s what I said to myself.

I had only seen it on Instagram as an influencer and instantly fell in love. I called around and found out the price. It was a little over $12,000. That’s correct. No way I was going to spend that much!

I tried to buy one on eBay for 1/3rd of the price. That ended up being a scam (no surprise) there. That story is here. I did not think that I was going to actually ever buy it.

When my SA presented it to me, I laid my eyes on it for the first time, and instantly, I fell in love.

The Egypt Jacket Tweed

The Chanel Egypt jacket’s tweed is insanely gorgeous lesage tweed. You can see the intricate woven details. Most of the Lesage tweed consists of monochromatic threads of blue, turquoise, and teal. The pink is the most unexpected element of this tweed. It adds interest and drama to the tweed.

The Buttons On Chanel Egypt Jacket

The buttons on this jacket from the Egypt collection are gripoix style. The gold is not bright and shiny. It’s got an aged feel to it. The signature CCs are a little hard to spot because they are off to the side.

The buttons on the sleeves are slightly smaller. There are two buttons on the sleeves.

Cut and Fit of The Jacket

One unexpected design element is the asymmetrical split at the bottom. Also to note, I am not a fan of how the gap looks uneven at the pockets. The fit of this jacket is fairly boxy, like many Chanel jackets. It’s got no collar, which I love.

Gold Thread and Woven Ribbon

Bright gold looped details intertwine with teal ribbon rope-like accents near the pockets, sleeves, and edges.

Weight And Interior Panels

This jacket is fairly heavy, as you would expect from most jackets in pre-fall collections. The lining is matching teal. It does not have micro CC’s. This jacket would have plenty of room for alterations. Mine was sized down.

Other Details

My new Chanel purchase came with a lesage tweed fabric, lining fabric, and 4 spare buttons. Note that I purchased a size 44 jacket and got it taken into 40, which was my size at the time. Now I am 38, and the jacket is too large for me 🙁

Final Thoughts

The collection holds great significance as it marks Karl’s final endeavor. This teal number is definitely the pièce de résistance of the entire collection. It’s exquisite. Its ornate design makes it hard to pull it off as a casual jacket.

It’s nearly impossible to find in the secondary market. If you own one, you are lucky. To the Chanel VVIP, I snagged it from; sorry, I am not sorry 🙂
